MBIE – Building controls update

Supplementary guidance on the seismic design of residential retaining structures in the Port Hills

MBIE has released new guidance on the seismic design of residential retaining walls in the Port Hills. This guidance is intended for engineers and designers of retaining walls and for building consent officers. It shows how to incorporate the effects of earthquake shaking into the design loadings for residential retaining walls.  The guidance will be supported by worked examples of different types of retaining walls, such as concrete cantilever walls, concrete crib walls, and timber pole walls. These worked examples will be progressively developed and uploaded to the MBIE website.
