How to avoid the speed wobbles in a booming building industry

Certified Builders Tool Box Seminars

With the construction industry on a growth curve again, helped in part by the Christchurch rebuild, the latest Certified Builders Association of New Zealand Tool Box seminars will benefit all builders throughout New Zealand.

The seminars, being held in 30 centres throughout New Zealand during June and July, will focus on managing a successful business during a period of growth. The “Managing Growing Business for Profit” seminars are open to all builders – you don’t have to be a member of Certified Builders to attend.

Certified Builders Chief Executive Grant Florence said the building industry seems to go through boom and bust cycles.

“This just seems to be the nature of the building industry,” he says. “There are indications that the sector is experiencing growth once again, and our Tool Box seminars have been put together to support and remind builders what they need to do to make sure that they keep their businesses in control (and making money) in a time of a growing activity,” Mr Florence said.

“All builders need to be prepared to move forward as opportunities present themselves but recovery can bring its own set of dangers and we are keen to help builders identify these and show them ways they can be prepared.”

Mr Florence said the Tool Box seminars will focus on seven tips for success in the industry during boom times.

The seminars will cover topics such as “Uncontrolled growth can cause series speed wobbles and loss of profits – how to control growth to a rate your business can cope” and “Growth needs funding – more materials, staff, equipment – where is that money going to come from?”

“As business picks up, it’s about ensuring you have good systems in place – will your current procedures and processes cope? How can you attract and retain the right people, and keep them motivated? For business owners it’s also about looking to the future – you’re probably already working long hours so as business grows how will you develop a trusted second layer that you can delegate to effectively and safely?”

ITM and Advantage Business Limited are partnering with Certified Builders Association for this series of ToolBox Seminars.

ITM Chief Executive Gordon Buswell is pleased to partner with Certified Builders in bringing the Tool Box seminars to builders. “We see the seminars as a very important tool to add value to the relationship we have with our customers both existing and future,” Mr Buswell said.

Certified Builder Mike Way from R&M Way Builders in Tauranga is looking forward to attending the Tool Box Managing Growing Business for Profit seminar series.

“The Certified Builders’ Tool Box series are always great; where else can you get such valuable information, in such an easy to understand format? The seminars have the added bonus of being able to network with designers and sub trades,” Mr Way said.
